FAIRISLE BY THE SEA - IN HOUSE WORKSHOP HOLIDAY DEPOSIT
This very special workshop will be held at a unique home in Whitstable, Kent. Marie first went to The Battery at Seasalter when she was head designer at Rowan and has art directed three or four photography shoots there. The Battery is a private home and is often used as a photography location house, you may have seen the interior being used in Country Living, Coast and Country Homes and Interiors magazines, as well as in the Rowan publications! Marie also used The Battery as her location for her book, Winter Crochet. Therefore this is an ‘one off’ opportunity to spend time in this exclusive historic building which sits on Whitstable beach and faces 120ft of secluded sea-front. The Battery will become our home from home for a few days and is not open to the general public at any time. This is a very extraordinary place and as soon as you step foot in this amazing house, you immediately relax and the wonderful host, Marilyn makes you very welcome with a steaming mug of tea and homemade cake. Marilyn is a great collector of many interesting and unusual things, especially from the 1940’s and 1950’s, and she displays her precious collections throughout the house, she is also an amazing cook! This beautiful home, flooded with natural day light, situated right on the beach is the perfect place to unwind, knit and relax…splendid!

THE BATTERY & WHITSTABLE
THE BATTERY is a historic building of Kent and was built in 1873 by the Navy as a part of the coastal defence for the UK. The building consisted at the time of two buildings made of wood, one building being the Drillhall with office, clothes store and the armoury and the second building being the battery with three gun ports facing seaward and another facing west. There was a magazine on the east side but this no longer remains. There also would have been a Parade Ground at the rear of the building. The Admiralty handed over the battery in the early 1900’s to the Royal Naval Reserve (later the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve) and it used as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers during WW1. Later in the 1940’s the battery was used for many years as a holiday retreat for disadvantaged children. Marilyn then bought and restored this wonderful building.
WHITSTABLE is a small fishing town on the Kent coast just 7 miles from historic Canterbury. Sometimes named the Pearl of Kent, Whitstable is famous for it’s oysters and hosts the annual Oyster Festival each July. This pretty seas-side town has a bohemian relaxed air, with it’s bustling seafood restaurants and narrow shopping lanes full of delis, boutique shops and art galleries.
